Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,
Why do they call people who make comments for a living "commentators?" Is it possible to commentate?
- Koi

A: Dear Koi,
From Merriam-Webster:
Main entry: commentate
Pronunciation: 'k-m&n-tAt
Function: verb
Transitive senses: to give a commentary on
Intransitive senses: to comment in a usually expository or interpretive manner; also to act as a commentator
The etymology of the word of this word, "the back-formation from commentator," dates from 1794. So yes, it is possible to commentate, and it has been possible for a long, long time.
