Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,
when was the last time the mormon doctrine was updated? do you think they will ever come up with a new mormon doctrine with even more modern topics? Do any of you refer to it when answering board q's? how credible is it?

A: Dear Wondering Big Time,

Ah. Mormon Doctrine (or "McDoctrine" as it is more commonly known) was originally published in 1958 and the second edition came out in 1966. However, most recent republishing was in 1999.

I have used it as a referene many times. It is credible enough to be quoted in conference talks, church educational system, Sunday school/priesthood/RS cirriculums. However, it is not endorsed by the church, or even published by the church for that matter. Bro. McConkie clearly states, "For the work itself, I assume full responsibility" (preface).

My rule of thumb is this: if Bro. Bruce says something, and backs it up with a scriptual reference that's good enough for me. If it's his own thoughts on a subject, or portion of a subject, I try to find another reference to back up his position.
