Dear 100 Hour Board,
Do the bells by DT really ring on the hour every hour. A friend of mine watched them on the hour but they didn't see any movement. Is there just a big speaker up there? We have our suspicions but require supreme 100-hour board verification.

A: Dear Morphonym:

Yes, they really do ring the bells on the hour and on the half hour (except during certain hours of the night when such ringing would be annoying). The bells don't appear to move because they're not like the "swing back and forth church bell" you're probably thinking of. Most carrillions use anchored bells which still ring, but don't swing. With swinging bells, it's hard to control exact when the hammer hits -- ask anyone who's been in a bell choir about adapting to the timing. So the bells are anchored to give more precise tempo control.
