Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

When did people start to throw rice at weddings and why?

- Duck

A: Dear Duck,

Many cultures have associated fertility with rice, even back to the ancient Assyrians, Hebrews, and Egyptians.

In Germany, the tradition states that they will get as many children as rice grains stay in the hair of the bride. In Asia throwing rice symbolizes a "full pantry". Some people believe it wards off evil spirits.

It is not to kill birds. You may try if you like, but it's a myth, anyway.

And if you like, you can read more about the exploding bird myth here: http://www.snopes.com/weddings/horrors/birdrice.htm
