Dear 100 Hour Board,

Is the bible true or false?

-Kelsey Barrus

A: Dear KB,

We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.

A: Dear Kelsey Barrus,

Truth value -- the quality of being true or false -- can only reside in a proposition, which is a complete statement with an inflectional head. Thus,

Bob likes llamas
Jimmy is the king of France
Marie is bald

all have truth value -- they can be verified. Linguistics phrases less complex than complete proposition have no truth value. Thus,

slithering along the ground by the river
reconstituted decalcified pumpkin pie filling
unabashedly mercurial at times

cannot be true or false. If I said to you, "this Roman volcano," can you imagine responding with, "I don't think so" or "We should look that up"?

Therefore, to say that the Bible is true or false crashes at the level of pragmatic interpretation.
