Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,
Why do glass bottles have a little indentation at the bottom? If you look at wine bottles or similar bottles you will notice that the bottom is rounded inwards. Why is that?
- curious

A: Dear Curious,
It has a two-fold purpose. First of all, it creates a sturdier bottle that is less prone to breakage and cracking. Secondly, it is a really cool design.

A: A dome shape has as higher surface area than a flat circle, so the forces inside the bottle (or soda can, for that matter) are distributed over a wider area, resulting in lower pressure on the bottom of the bottle.
