Another question about David Copperfield by Charles Dickens: Was Martha Endell a prostitute? She is so irretrievably spurned and disdained, it is hard to imagine how else she would come to be so universally condemned.

Again (like in Board Question #27626) I turned to my mother for more info on this one:

"I don't think Martha was a prostitute at first any more than Little Emily was. I think she was a 'ruined woman' in the same way that Little Emily was, and that's why Martha had so much empathy for Little Emily. However, when she went to London she may have turned to prostitution in desperation. In that time period, it was pretty common for women to look to prostitution as a means of survival."
