"That's about as likely as a collaboration between David Bowie and the Muppets." - Katya

Dear Men of the 100 Hour Board,

I've read the archives on this one, but I'm interested in how you would personally feel if a girl asked you out for a first date. I'm thinking of asking this guy out and I'm trying to think of a fun activity and a way not to appear too forward/pathetic. Any ideas?

A: Dear Laura Garcia de Jesus Martinez,

I know it is against "tradition," but I don't see anything wrong with it. I have many a girl ask me out and I enjoyed it. Go for it!

A: Dear Curious Female,

I'm shy. It is freaking awesome when a girl asks me out. If you are looking for good activities I would recommend mini-golf, visiting an art musuem, or going hiking to enjoy the good old outdoors.

I hope this helps. Please don't hate me.

A: Dear cautiously interested,

Although I have few qualms about asking girls out, I still wouldn't mind if they asked me. I would say that if you feel like you would have fun together, and you want to ask him, go for it. If you really don't feel comfortable you could go the flirting-and-dropping-hints route, but you sound like you don't want to do that this time.

Ideas not to appear too forward or pathetic...well, let's face it, you will appear a bit more forward than "tradition" dictates, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing. I think the main thing is to be confident. I suspect that if you approach it that way you'll avoid the "pathetic" appearance that you're trying not to convey. Just express that you want to have fun, and ask him.

For ideas for activities, figure out what kind of things you're interested in. You can always check the calendars at BYU (such as the All-in-One Calendar) to see what's going on. There're usually concerts, plays, or comedies, to name a few. You might cook a meal as part of the date, or recruit him and cook together--that can be a lot of fun, if it's something you'd enjoy. You can do something outdoors, like hiking or biking. You can do something sporty, like racquetball or tennis. Think of the kinds of things you've enjoyed on past dates for more ideas.

Have fun, and I hope you enjoy the date!
