A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken. - James Dent

Dear 100 Hour Board,

Why is Mt. Chimborazo in Ecuador the point farthest away from the earth's center?

A: Dear NKOTB:

The earth isn't perfectly spherical. It's a little bit flattened so that the distance from the equator, through the center of the earth, and back out to the equator is longer than the distance from the north pole to the south pole. In other words, sea level at the north pole is not as far from the earth's center as sea level at the equator. Since Mt. Chimborazo is really close to the equator, it's the farthest away from the earth's center. More so than even Everest, which is well north of the equator.
