Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

I have read recently that the quarry in Little Cottonwood Canyon did not contain granite. Technically, quartz monzonite was used to build the Salt Lake Temple.

What's the dif between granite & quartz monzonite?

Thx. - Ando [Idaho]

A: Dear And One,

Wikipedia to the rescue!
Because of its coloring it is often confused with granite, but whereas the mass of granite is 20% quartz, quartz monzonite is only 5-20% quartz.
Apparently, it is very similar to granite, only different in the proportions of "ingredients", like K-feldspar, plagioclase, minor ferromagnesian minerals, and of course, quartz.
