Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

Why is white gold more expensive than yellow gold?

- Miss Katria

A: Dear Missy,

Most likely because white gold is more popular now than yellow gold. It's expensive to be trendy.

There are some other factors, though, that seem reasonable. Gold jewelry is rarely made from pure 24-karat gold. Usually, it is sold in 14 or 18 karat alloys. The yellow alloys use mainly copper, which is really cheap. White gold alloys are formed from either nickel, which is slightly more expensive and requires rhodium plating, or palladium, which is much more expensive than nickel. Palladium white gold is becoming more popular because it doesn't interact with skin like nickel, which may be why you've noticed the price for white gold is higher than yellow. Cheaper alloys using nickel can have very similar prices.
