Dear 100 Hour Board,
In the HBLL there are tall security devices that prevent books that aren't checked out from passing through. Why aren't these devices taller? Isn't it possible to hold a book up and walk through without the alarm sounding?
Yes, if you're tall enough, you can walk through them with said contraband held high in the air. However, since they are theoretically under Big Brother surveillance (aka, watched by the lovely library security personnel), they don't need to be taller.
Actually, those devices can detect in an area outside of their actual size-- if you've ever had ILL books you know this. I'll pass those things around, and if I'm not careful and keep them back from the sensors (even on the other side) they'll beep when the security guard passes them to me. Same thing with area above, though if you were something like 8'3" you could probably get away with it.
