Dear 100 Hour Board,

How come the messages on instant messenger come up almost instantaneously, no matter the speed of you internet connection?

A: Dear AOL Junkie,
Actually, they don't. If you operate an ancient computer on a 28.8 modem like I do when I go to my parents house over Christmas break, there can be a split-second lag. Instant messaging requires very little transfer of information, so almost any connection speed is sufficient. Unless you're on my dad's computer. Ugh, I almost went through computer withdrawl symptoms by Christmas day.
