Dear 100 Hour Board,
Why do soup cans have ribs? When you open up almost any canned good, the can is ribbed around the middle. I was thinking it might be so the product would come out of the can easier, but I disregarded this thought because the product fills those ribs anyway.

A: Dear Wonder Boy,
The ribbing on the cans is to prevent the can from bursting in the center. Because of the way they're designed, the ribbing doesn't allow expansion they way a straight can would. This makes it so you can put a whole big stack of cans (in cases, usually) and not have the ones on the bottom collapse (usually).
