Dear 100 Hour Board,

In luke 22:36-38 christ has them buy swords and they do. Is this so that they could cut that guys ear off and so jesus can heal it? Or did everone carry swords then and Jesus was preparing them for a life without Him? does this make sence?

A: Dear Goerge,

At the April 1942 General Conference—during World War II—President David O. McKay, then second counselor in the First Presidency, spoke forcefully on the Lord's disapproval of nations that begin wars. During this speech, he mentioned the passage you mentioned and gave his interpretation:
Without reading into the text something which is not intended or even implied, the most that one can get from this admonition is that henceforth the disciples going forth into an antagonistic world might supply themselves with necessary support and the usual means of defense.
The whole talk is timely and worth reading.
