"I like fiery passion, actually." - Olympus

Dear 100 Hour Board,

I've heard rumors of a new hymnbook in the works. Is there any sort of truth to these rumors?

- David

A: Dear David,

As of June 22, 2010 (the day I called Church Headquarters in Salt Lake) there are no such plans to work on a new English hymnbook. They are working on some other language hymnbooks, but the English one is here to stay for at least a couple more years.

I don't know where you heard this rumor, but don't believe that person. Also, if the Church releases a new version of the hymnbook in the future, rest assured it will be publicized and widely known.

A: Dear Davey,

The 1947 hymnal (you know--the brown one that you copy "Come Thou Fount" from?) lasted 38 years before it was replaced with the 1985 edition. If that's the current model, I imagine it will be at least another ten years before we get a new replacement.

That being said, I'm sure that even though there are no active plans to replace the hymnal in the near future that the Church Music Committee has several changes in mind that they'd like to make when the time comes. It wouldn't surprise me if just about all of The Choirbook made the next cut, as well as other traditional Christian hymns like "It Is Well With My Soul." Heck, even some translated hymns might make it in, like "Thus Saith The Lord" from the Tongan hymnal. I can also see choir pieces making it in, too--"O Divine Redeemer" and "This Is The Christ" are obvious possibilities.

Anyway, my point is that they probably do have some changes in mind even if they aren't warming the presses yet.

Regardless, I must point out the the Children's Songbook is in much greater need of an update than the hymnal. "Scripture Power" and "If the Savior Stood Beside Me" are two staples in primary programs these days that aren't in the current edition, and those pictures in there need to be modernized in a big way. Can I get an amen?
