Dear 100 Hour Board,
Why do the Swiss guard the Vatican and not Italians?
- American tourist

A: Dear Tourist-

Tradition! The Swiss have long been known as great soldiers. Especially as mercenaries. Additionally, by having foreigners as guards, Catholic leaders were also safer, since guards were less likely to be involved in local intrigues. During certain time periods, this was quite a problem, so having a hghly trained security force with no loyalties to local groups was quite a draw for the Vatican.
