Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

Does the charming floating lantern tradition in Tangled relate to Taiwanese lanterns at all? I saw an advertisement and couldn't help but be struck by the uncanny similarity.

---Portia

A:

Dear Portia,

They do have an uncanny similarity. Disney's official word is that the lanterns in Tangled are "wish lanterns," which are indeed the same kind traditionally released at the end of Chinese New Year in Taiwan. There are other wish lantern traditions that may have influenced the movie, but I think it's pretty safe to say that there is a strong connection between the Taiwanese tradition and the depiction in Tangled
