Dear 100 Hour Board,
Geology question. This beach at Pondicherry looks like the rocks of Washington State with the red rock of Cedar City. What's going on?
Promenade beach (where that picture was taken) used to be one of the most popular beaches in Pondicherry, but due to extreme erosion almost all of it was lost. They constructed a seawall out of granite (fun side note: rock used to prevent erosion is known generically as riprap), which explains the black rocks you see in that photo. They then created an artificial "beach" on top of the seawall (known as "la Faux-Plage," or "the Fake Beach"). Although it's totally impossible to swim there anymore due to the waves crashing against the seawall, the area behind the seawall is still a popular place to stroll in the evenings.
