Dear 100 Hour Board,

I have a small, 3-year old Bichon Poo, a mix between a Bichon and a Poodle. In my youth I had a full-blooded Poodle. They are about the same size and look remarkably similar.

Here's my question. This morning, as I was walking toward the back door to let her out to do her business, I noticed that while using her front legs normally, she hops a lot on right hind leg, not always using the left. I remembered my other dog doing the same thing and then wondered if it's just my dogs, all dogs, or just Poodles that do this...and why.

Can you help?

Thank you!!

Dear Harry,

Given the breed of your dogs and the type of hop, it's probably a luxating patella, which is an unstable kneecap that can cause stiffness or weakness in the leg. This fact sheet sums up the condition pretty well.
