Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

I'm applying to BYU Provo, and I need to write and essay of 250 words about why I want to go to BYU and not BYU-I or BYU Hawaii, so I'm trying to invetigate the main diferences between BYU and BYU-I. So, my question is: What do you guys think are the main differences between the social life, service opportunities, and clubs between BYU and BYU-I?

A:

Dear Anitza,

While the social life and clubs will definitely vary from school to school, your essay will probably go over better if you focus on the academic differences in the program you're going into. For instance, the BYU science program is significantly more robust than Idaho or Hawaii and offers a greater variety of majors; the business school at BYU is more renowned; etc. Even if you don't know what you want to do yet, pick something you might want to do someday and explain how BYU's academic program will prepare you better. They will be more impressed with your application if you sound like you're motivated and have a sense of direction in your studies than if you focus on the social aspect. You can also include some of that to appear more well rounded, but I don't think it will pack as much of a punch in the essay.
