"I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells." - Dr. Seuss
Question #840 posted on 09/22/2003 midnight

Dear 100 Hour Board,
My husband and I just moved into a Wyview Park Apartment and we are intrigued by the smoke alarm in the bedroom. It has a bright blinking light, which is a little hard to get used to when you are trying to sleep. The interesting thing is that sometimes it blinks red and other times it blinks white. There seems to be no rhyme nor reason in the difference in colors and we cannot come up with any obvious reasons why it would do this. Can you find out the answer?

A: Dear KNQD,

See if you can see a brand name on the unit, then search the net for information, or call your housing supervisor and ask them for a owner's manual. They should have those available for you. Most of the time those lights are used to indicate that they are working, or to indicate battery power. As long as it's not making that stupid beep every 5 minutes you're probably ok...
