Dear 100 Hour Board that can speak Spanish,
So, I've been watching el Gran Hotel (Spanish Version) and that got me thinking. What are some of your favorite telenovelas?
Dear Sonorous, Ornery Chameleons Kicking Swallows,
I've only seen bits and pieces of telenovelas as they were playing in houses or restaurants during my mission (and perhaps once at home; I think Mère Rubik was watching El Gran Hotel at some point). The ones I recognized were Corona de Lagrimas and Por Ella Soy Eva. I thought Por Ella Soy Eva looked funny.
Other telenovela memories:
-Sitting in a restaurant and watching as a woman approached her husband with a stolen baby and said "Look, honey! I found us a child!"
-Waiting for a lesson to start and watching as a distraught rancher's daughter fumbled around with a rifle for like five minutes while one of her suitors approached on a horse (she was off in the bushes and thought she was alone). She finally gets off a shot and, wouldn't you know it, the suitor is right there. The horse reared back, but the cliffhanger meant that I never found out if she actually shot the dude or not.
-Oh, right: there was some random educational telenovela that we started watching in my high school Spanish class. I wish we would have finished it to the end.
My Spanish is pitiful, considering how many classes I've taken over the years. But Jane the Virgin is an American adaptation of a Venezuelan telenovela that satirizes common telenovela devices. I've only seen the first season, but I enjoyed it greatly, and from what I've seen the second season got good reviews as well. You can find the first season on Netflix (it's in English, in case that wasn't clear).
As a disclaimer, for potential Mormon viewers, sex is kind of an important concept for the show, as the title might imply. But as far as content goes, there's no nudity or serious language.
