Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

So, I'm honestly not sure how you can help me with this, which is actually the reason I didn't ask this question a long time ago... but it's worth a shot, right?

Here's the issue. I got home from my mission about a year and a half ago, and appropriately updated my Facebook profile picture to one of my mission favorites. A year and a half later, it's still my profile picture. The problem is that I honestly just don't have any other photos! Sure, I've been in the occasional group picture, but nothing that can be reasonably cut or cropped and still look good. (Trust me, I've looked and tried.) I have an old phone that does not take good pictures, so selfies isn't really an option... and honestly, I'm not the kind of person to take selfies anyway.

Where does everyone else get their good pictures, and why don't I have any? And how can I get some without having to ask friends to take glamour shots of me trying to be cool? (Unless that's what it takes?...)

Thanks!

Dear Wait a Second, You're Not Me,

First of all, I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing to have an old picture as your profile picture. I mean, if your appearance has changed drastically during that time period it might be a little weird, but otherwise, you might as well keep rocking it.

I perused my friends list to look at what the in thing seems to be for profile pictures these days, and it looks like you either need to take a fun (but very attractive) picture with friends (because selfies are acceptable for everyone if other people are in them), take a normal selfie, or go somewhere cool and have someone take a picture of you there. That last option might be the best, because while it seems weird to ask someone to take a picture of you hanging out in your living room, if you're in a beautiful park or hike or cityscape or something, it's much more socially acceptable to ask someone to get a picture of you.

Good luck in your endeavors.

Dear Apparently Not Alta,

You could also be like me and just have your picture be the back of your head against a black background. Then everybody will be like "Hey, your profile picture is ridikalous." They may also ask for your number.

-Frère Rubik hopes you get the reference because the video has some swears and he's not linking to it. He's serious about the back-of-the-head profile picture, though.

Dear you,

I had this exact same problem once. I eventually asked my brother to take some glamour shots of me.

The thing with photos is you never get good ones by accident. It takes some effort. You don't necessarily have to schedule a photo shoot with someone. Just take a good camera around with you for awhile in your bag or in your car. When something nice comes up, ask anyone around to get a pic of you, and eventually you'll have some good ones.
