Dear 100 Hour Board,
How does the new Duck Tales compare to the original?
See for yourself! They posted the premiere on YouTube for free right here!
As for me, I think it's great! Admittedly, I haven't watched a full episode of the old Ducktales since I was a wee Rubik, so I can't quite speak as to how the new compares to the old. But, again, the new one seems like it'll be good! Things I think it has going for it:
- An amazing voice cast. I mean, they got David Tennant. DAVID. FREAKING. TENNANT. On top of that, you've got Dani Pudi (Abed from Community), Ben Schwartz (Jean Ralphio from Parks & Rec), Beck Bennett and Bobby Moynihan from SNL...you know, I'm realizing that I'm basically just listing the cast. THEY'RE ALL SO GOOD! And Lin Manuel Miranda is going to be Gizmoduck! Really, the talent behind this operation is astounding.
- Good art. Apparently there was some controversy online about the new style, but I like it a lot. It's very flat and clean and looks different from most things on TV.
- Launchpad McQuack. It is the great combination of the writers coming up with great things to say and Beck Bennett absolutely killing the delivery. The "Swedish Uncle" joke in the latter half of the premiere had me in stitches. (Also I've been rewatching the premiere as I write this and he has another great line in "Hi, nice to meet you! I'm everybody's friend!")
- Good story. Now, I know: most of the old series was mostly self-contained; events from one episode didn't really affect the next. It looks like the new series will be a bit more serialized, and you know what? I'm excited. It's new! It's good! There's so much untapped potential!
So, yeah. I think the new show is great and definitely want to find a way to watch more of it going forward.
