Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

If the Salt Lake Temple went for sale today, how much would it go for?

-Small investor

A:

Dear investor,

Well, the Salt Lake Temple cost about 100 million dollars to build, adjusted for inflation. Now, I'm sure that the temple wouldn't be sold for just the mere cost of it's building materials, and a lot of value has been added since then, but I also I am way less able to estimate how much the building would be sold for. I can't really think of a situation in which the church would actually be selling the Salt Lake Temple, but they would never part with it anywhere near easily, so it would sell for much more. I imagine that in any case it would sell for around $200 million. I did some research on Zillow, but ever church building that I looked up was unlisted, not surprisingly. However, for reference I found out that the Empire State Building is worth about $2 billion, and the Willis Tower sold for $1.3 billion. The White House is worth about $400 million. The Pennsylvania temple cost about $70 million and the San Diego cost about $24 million. In comparison to those prices, I'd think that the $200 price tag is probably pretty fair, but I could always be pretty far off.

Keep it real,
Sherpa Dave
