Dear 100 Hour Board,
I have already graduated from BYU, but not walked yet (meaning, I graduated in December 2017, have received my diploma, and will walk for April 2018). If I formally resign from the church before April, will that affect my ability to participate in graduation ceremonies?
Obviously I could wait to resign, but I'd really like to do so soon. Any info you can find will be helpful.
According to BYU, "If a student has an Honor Code hold two weeks prior to commencement [not the actual graduation, which you already did], their name will be removed from the commencement and convocation programs. If the hold is removed after the commencement program goes to the press and prior to commencement day, the student is authorized to walk but their name will not be listed in the program."
Is it likely they'll notice you've resigned from the Church and give you an Honor Code hold? I don't know. I've had experiences that would suggest it could happen (for instance, my roommate's sister was told if she didn't attend church more often (she took care of two adorable but crazy toddlers) she would be given an Honor Code hold and prevented from attending BYU), but also experiences to suggest it wouldn't. But to be on the safe side, I would wait until after you walk to resign from the church.
