Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

On a scale from 0 to 10, where 0 is no idea and 10 is could start on/do it today very well with no further preparation, what would you estimate your skill level to be for the following tasks:

build a retainer wall
change a diaper
pilot a sailboat
write a computer program
debug a computer program with gdb on the command line
lead a meeting
change a flat tire
arc weld a basic butt joint
write a sonnet
write a proof of the Pythagorean theorem
ride a unicycle
play Super Mario Brothers
knit a scarf
play chess
tango
sell a car
make a chair
draw a self-portrait
answer a random question

-Robert

A:

Dear Bob,

I was unreasonably excited for this but still somehow took forever to do it. Well, here it is.

build a retainer wall 4
change a diaper 9
pilot a sailboat 7
write a computer program Any program? 9 A program that does anything cool? 1
debug a computer program with gdb on the command line 0
lead a meeting 9
change a flat tire 9
arc weld a basic butt joint 0
write a sonnet 9
write a proof of the Pythagorean theorem 4
ride a unicycle 3
play Super Mario Brothers 9
knit a scarf 6
play chess 9
tango 2
sell a car 6
make a chair 5
draw a self-portrait 4
answer a random question 0

Keep it real,
Sherpa Dave

A:

Dear Robert If that is your real name,

While this may seem like a random question, I see right through it. I bet this is a test run by a top secret government agency to determine who shall become the protectors of Earth! These skills are probably highly necessary for the next mission. Anyways, am I the man for the job? Let's see.

build a retainer wall 6
change a diaper 7
pilot a sailboat  2
write a computer program  3.5
debug a computer program with gdb on the command line 0
lead a meeting  8
change a flat tire 9
arc weld a basic butt joint 3
write a sonnet 2
write a proof of the Pythagorean theorem 3
ride a unicycle 2.5
play Super Mario Brothers 7
knit a scarf 0
play chess 5
tango 1
sell a car 4
make a chair 10
draw a self-portrait 2.5
answer a random question 10

Average: 4.39

As you can see, I'm probably not the man for the job. My lack of knitting, debugging, and tango skills would definitely be my downfall. If you need anyone to make a chair though, I could totes do that for you.

Peace,

Tipperary

Dear Robespierre,

As a note (since you didn't actually specify... ), I'm going to interpret the 0-10 scale as a log scale—i.e. 4 is an order of magnitude greater than 3 and so on. This just makes more intuitive sense to me. It will also probably result in my responses being "higher" than they would with normally spaced points as I'm measuring based on how far away I am from a 10, and the greater numbers are actually farther apart from each other than the lower numbers.

  • Build a retainer wall: 6
  • Change a diaper: 10
  • Pilot a sailboat: 4.5
  • Write a computer program: 9 (of course this heavily depends on the type of computer program I'm supposed to write (and it would have to be in Python), but that said, I do write a minimum of two computer programs a week and do pretty well with those, which is my justification for the high score)
  • Debug a computer program with gdb on the command line: 7.8
  • Lead a meeting: 8
  • Change a flat tire: 1
  • Arc weld a basic butt joint: ??? (those question marks mean 0)
  • Write a sonnet: 9
  • Write a proof of the Pythagorean theorem: 10 (oh man, I've got this one so down)
  • Ride a unicycle: 0.5 (I mean, I could probably clumsily fall off of it... )
  • Play Super Mario Brothers: 4
  • Knit a scarf: 8
  • Play chess: 5
  • Tango: 5
  • Sell a car: 6
  • Make a chair: 5
  • Draw a self-portrait: by weird happenstance, I was struck by a sudden urge to sketch last week, and so I drew this (incomplete) self-portrait (which I'm self-consciously NOT giving a score cause I'm afraid readers would disagree with that score, and then it would undermine this entire answer):

Basically if you want a computer program that returns sonnets about fundamental math topics, I'm your gal.
