Dear 100 Hour Board,

I often cut through the ASB on my way to class, and when I'm walking up to the building (from the north side with the fountain and the flowerbeds) it seems like I can always hear a strange, high-pitched mechanical chirp, kind of like a ringing in my ears. I only hear it in this specific location - I stop hearing it as soon as I enter the building. There are these weird little devices in the flowerbeds mounted on little posts, and I wonder if those have something to do with the noise, but I honestly have no idea where it's coming from and it's been driving me crazy. So I turn to the Board with my question: WHAT IS GOING ON? What is the source of the mysterious ringing noise?

Dear Beatrice,

I have the answer for you! As I approached the building I too noticed the mysterious ringing.

At first I thought I was crazy, but I followed the ringing until I came to the source:

It might be hard to see but the label says “solar animal repeller”. So there you have it. The mysterious ringing noise is there to keep critters out of the flowerbeds. The flowers look good so it seems like it's doing a good job. As a matter of fact, I think the devices work on students as well.
