Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

Does the church own Kirton McConkie? What is the history of the relationship between the church and Kirton McConkie?

-My Name Here

A:

Dear friend,

The Church does not formally own the Kirton McConkie law firm, but they do have a very strong relationship. You may have noticed that Kirton McConkie is definitely the law firm of choice when it comes to a large number of legal issues that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (hereafter referred to as 'The Church') is involved with - most recently regarding Prop 2.

Kirton McConkie was founded by Oscar W. McConkie, younger brother to Bruce R. McConkie (his name may sound familiar.) Oscar McConkie served as a bishop, stake president, and mission president in his lifetime, as well as serving in the Utah State House of Representatives before creating the law firm. He has also authored lots of books that can be found at Deseret Book.

According to a few sources that I found, cases investigated/fought for the Church make up about 30% of the revenue/casework for Kirton McConkie, though they do have other cases as well.

Basically, the law firm was formed by members of the Church, and over time, it has represented the Church in the majority of its cases because of their shared interests.

Cheers,
