Just kidding. I'll give you the real answer. It's spikes. 

No, seriously, a big ol' spike. Eventually, the spike became a two-prong spike, and then eventually a fork. Obviously they liked this better because it was way more efficient.

I think it's also fair to say they probably at least SOMETIMES ate pasta with their hands before that.
