Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

I've seen the images of highway signs directing traffic. How do they check your Muslim-ness at the entrance to Mecca?

-No Hajj

A:

Dear No Hajj,

By checking ID cards! People coming from outside Saudi Arabia have to have a Hajj visa, which has your religion listed on it. When you apply, you have to have proof from an Imam of your conversion. Anyone coming from within Saudi Arabia has to have a Saudi license, which also has your religion on it. On the roads and within Mecca, they have officials that check people's IDs. Obviously, there are a TON of people that go every year, so you can bet they can't check everyone. From some of the places I read, the more you look like a local, the less likely you are to get checked. But if they do check your ID and find out you aren't a Muslim, you get kicked out.
