Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

My mom told me that (back in the 90s) the HBLL played the Hawaii 5-0 theme song when they were closing for the night, but I’ve seen that it has changed since then. What song do they play now, and what were some other notable songs?

— Future Cougar

A:

Dear Future Cougar,

I spoke to a very nice security guard in the library, who told me that the guards have a 350-song playlist, from which they can choose whichever songs they like. I was not about to ask the poor man for all 350 songs, but he was kind enough to tell me his favorites:

  • "Fireflies" - Owl City
  • "Behind Blue Eyes" - Limp Bizkit
  • "Leaving on a Jet Plane" - John Denver
  • "Piano Man" - Billy Joel
  • "Hallelujah" - Leonard Cohen
  • "Danger Zone" - Kenny Loggins

While I was there, I also heard “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana, Peter Hollens’s cover of “Loch Lomond”, and a cover of "The Greatest Show" by Panic! At The Disco.

As for songs that have previously graced the HBLL's Closing Time Playlist, you may be interested in Board Question #44653 and Board Question #9173. Apparently, "When The Saints Go Marching In" was the go-to for a little while. I was also amused to learn about the Tuesday-night "Get Out Quickly" mix referenced in Board Question #54533.

Best,
Josefina
