Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board

Is it true that there are more hip replacements now because of the popularity of yoga?

A:

Dear wild turkey,

A few lines from the introduction of this 2018 paper summarize my own findings well: "No objective data are available to verify the incidence of THA (total hip arthroplasty) patients also practicing yoga, although we postulate that this has been increasing along with yoga's popularity. Anecdotally, this has been our experience with patients after THA." So basically I couldn't find any data-based evidence that yoga is the reason behind the increase in hip replacements, but I did find a lot of stories about people who did yoga who had to get hip replacements. The paper I linked earlier includes a few case studies, and I also read this and this, if you're interested.

Sincerely,

Cerulean

A:

Dear friend,

Do I think that it's because of yoga? No.

Because correlation is not causation. I'd be hard-pressed to say that yoga-love is causing the upswing in hip replacements. I'd like to see the variables they controlled for. I'd like to see some cross-cultural comparisons as well. That's all I have to say.

Cheers,
