Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

Ever since I was a teenager, I have loved the story of Abish in the Book of Mormon. I recently gave my first daughter the middle name Abish to help her have an example of faith she can feel a special connection to. I would love to have a picture of Abish that she could hang in her bedroom growing up. But finding good pictures/paintings of women from the scriptures is so hard! And Abish is so overlooked, I’ve seen maybe two depictions of her ever. So, what artwork can you find me of Abish? Bonus for including any other artwork of scriptural women that you love.

A:

Dear Saffron,

One of my favorite artists, Elsbeth Young, has a Women of the Bible series. Though she does have some Book of Mormon pieces, unfortunately none are of Abish.

I think her work is beautiful and love that she features a lot of women and people of different nationalities. You can also see several of her paintings in temples.

Dear Nophi,

It's not a work of visual art, but I'd recommend The Book of Abish. I haven't actually read it yet, but it's on my list. Same with The Women's Book of Mormon.

This link has several depictions of Abish, including one by Walter Rane that is fairly well known (although I should note that the one at the top of the page with the blue background, "Maidservant Hero" by James Fullmer, is actually intended to be a depiction of the woman in Alma 50:30-31.)

Also, the June 2020 Friend magazine cover has a painting of Abish by Dilleen Marsh that I love! I scoured the internet looking for a way to buy a print but couldn't find anything. I did find the artist's instagram (@dilleenart) and website (https://www.dilleenmarsh.com/), so if you're interested you might be able to contact her directly and ask if prints are available. Good luck!!!
