Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

How trustworthy are text messages? I mean, could they be used as evidence in a court of law?

A: Dear 5 Cents,
It's possible. Right now the court systems are trying to decide how various pieces of electronic evidence may be admitted in trials. Even e-mails represent a difficult problem because there is no trace of them after deletion. There are also fears of possible forgeries, etc. I think it would be admissible in court, especially if the service provider were able to substantiate the content or the source and receiver. This may change in the future, however, as the courts decide how to treat these forms of communication.
