Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

What kind of career options are there in photography? how popular is it? is anyone out there majoring in photography? if so, whats it like?

- Poptart

A: Dear Poptart,

I'm not majoring in photography, but at work I interact fairly often with a photography graduate student. When I asked him what job opportunities are available for photography majors, he listed off quite a few. Among them were:
  • Traditional portraiture
  • Staff photographer (newspaper/magazine)
  • Staff photographer (large non-news company)
  • Fine art
  • Teaching
In addition, the Photography Major Academic Plan (MAP) lists the following career opportunities:
  • Portraiture
  • Commercial illustration
  • Advertising
  • Fashion
  • Architectural photography
  • Photojournalism; editorial, stock, industrial
  • Fine art
  • Educational, medical and travel photography
  • Conservation
  • Marketing and manufacturing
  • Photo-finishing

If you have more questions about the program and opportunities, I'd suggest talking to a photography professor or a Visual Arts advisor. They'll be able to address your specific questions.
