Why do products always have written on them where they are made? Is this required?

See Board Question #23762 for starters. It's basically to give the consumer more information about the product. It may seem silly at first, but it becomes serious business when the consumer wants to know if werf's toys are from China and could have lead paint in them, or if their dog food will kill their dog. According to this, US law requires it on either the product or the packaging.
