Q:

Dear 100 Hour Board,

A friend and I were talking about helium, and we started wondering: is it really detrimental to your vocal chords and/or brain? What exactly does it do, anyway?

Here's another helium question: does it serve any purposes other than making things float, allowing you to talk in higher registers, and giving those around you something to laugh at?

A: Dear Noble,
Check out Board Question #3459 for what helium does.
Answer to the other question: no.
